Exploring Japanese Culture and More

Trash Taste is a popular weekly audio and video podcast hosted by Joey Bizinger, Garnt Maneetapho, and Connor Colquhoun. The three Tokyo-based content creators focus mainly on anime and Japanese pop culture, discussing a wide range of topics related to life in Japan. In this article, we’ll delve into what makes this podcast so popular and explore some of its most notable moments.

Origins of Trash Taste

GeeXPlus, a subsidiary of BookWalker, started the Trash Taste podcast in February 2020. It helped the hosts relocate to Japan to promote their products and have better access to Japanese culture. After moving to Japan, the three hosts decided to start the podcast they had been planning for some time. The first episode aired on YouTube in June 2020, and new episodes have been released every Friday since then.

Live Shows and Special Events

Trash Taste has also ventured into live shows and special events. In January 2021, the first live show, called Trash Taste After Dark, was broadcast on Twitch. The hosts also co-streamed the 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in February of that year. In March 2022, they hosted a 24-hour charity event for Doctors Without Borders on Twitch, raising an impressive $181,000 in donations.

Seasons and Locations

In May 2021, the hosts moved to a new studio, kicking off what they dubbed “season two” of the podcast. In June 2021, The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan invited them to participate in a live “podcast” event about Japan-based YouTubers. Trash Taste has also appeared in the Foreign Correspondent Club Japan’s Number 1 Shimbun Magazine.

In May to July 2022, the podcast recorded outside of Japan for the first time, with episodes recorded in London, Los Angeles, and Sydney. These episodes were released on various dates from June to September 2022. The hosts also participated in various Q&A/discussion panels and special events at MCM London Comic Con, Anime Expo, Florida Supercon, and SMASH! In October 2022, during the Trash Taste 2022 Tour, the hosts participated in the New York Comic Con and had an impromptu podcast recording in Tampa, Florida.
